Skiing in Afghanistan with Untamed Borders and Afghan Peaks

The adventure travel company, Untamed Borders, was the first to lead ski excursions to Afghanistan in 2011. The company has been operating there since, taking international tourists annually, apart from a brief break during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour operator leads adventure ski excursions to the Koh-e-Baba Mountain range in Bamiyan Province, located in the center of the country. This region offers expansive acres of great powder and virgin routes, making it perfect for backcountry skiing.

During an Afghan ski excursion with Untamed Borders, you often encounter local men and children who use homemade skis made out of wood. They also participate in the local Afghan Peaks Ski Race, held in the area every year, competing on their wooden skis. Untamed Borders plans their ski trips to Bamiyan Province to coincide with the dates of the ski competition, giving international tourists the opportunity to compete against the local participants on the slopes. Only 15 years ago, skiing was unheard of in Bamiyan.

However, thanks to the hard work of Afghan Youth, with assistance from international skiers, the sport’s popularity has grown. There are now several grassroots ski clubs in the country, and groups ski in the Hindu Kush area as well. At the end of the season, they come together to race in the Afghan Peaks competition. Untamed Borders has been involved in the country’s skiing development since its early years. Founder James Willcox describes it as a rewarding experience, saying, “Many of the faces I saw entering the main adult races, I had known as boys just learning how to ski. It bodes well for the future of the sport in the country, with many more youngsters coming through the ranks.”

International groups who join Untamed Borders in Afghanistan have more than just a skiing experience. James Willcox explains, “If you’re looking for the best skiing conditions on earth, this may not be the trip for you. However, if you’re seeking a cultural experience and the chance to do some backcountry skiing in a fascinating location, this trip absolutely ticks the box. It’s part of a growing trend of people looking for more adventurous ski destinations. We are witnessing an increasing number of ski tourists who are interested in off-the-beaten-track experiences, and we are constantly seeking to add new ski locations to our itinerary list, while also continuing the work we have been doing for many years in countries like Afghanistan.”

Untamed Borders will return to the country for a ski trip in early 2024. More details about the trip and a booking link can be found here:
